About Us

Goddard Veterinary Group Hydrotherapy Centre

Our Hydrotherapy Centre is based in the grounds of Chingford Boarding Kennels. Both are owned by the Goddard Veterinary Group - one of the largest veterinary practices in the UK, with three hospitals and a network of branches within Greater London. We have been caring for animals for more than 50 years and will always provide the best possible care and treatment for your pet. Our Centre is managed by Matt Cornell and run by Su Glass and Sam Clements, veterinary nurses qualified and experienced in hydrotherapy.

Your initial session will last for approximately an hour. This allows us plenty of time to take a detailed case history and assessment of your pet. They will need to be weighed and we will conduct a general health check to ensure we get your pets therapy plan right for them. We will tailor this to their current ability but will amend it accordingly when necessary.
Initially your dog may not swim for more than a few minutes in order that we can regularly check their temperature and ensure against over-exertion. The jets will be used when your dog is fit enough and feels completely confident in the water. We advise half an hour for follow-up swims to allow a reassessment and monitoring of progress.
As well as the medical benefits of hydrotherapy, your dog might simply enjoy a warm swim indoors, whatever the weather! It's ideal for fun and general fitness and suitable for agility, working and racing dogs alike. It is also a perfect solution for clients who find it increasingly difficult to exercise their dogs. Showers and drying facilities are available.

If you feel hydrotherapy would benefit your dog please discuss this with your Veterinary Surgeon. We may need to contact your vet before a booking is made to obtain confirmation of good health. We also have a vet on site should additional advice or treatment be required.

Our hydrotherapy pool is of the latest design, using jets that do not create undercurrents which might otherwise hinder your pet's buoyancy. Our aim is to make their experience as stress free as possible and to allow a trusting bond to develop. This will enable your dog to enjoy the best, personalised exercise regime possible for their recovery.
"Our new hydrotherapy centre is an ideal way to rehabilitate and exercise dogs of all ages and fitness levels"

What Veterinary Surgeons Are Saying About :

Hydrotherapy provides a unique method of improving mobility and quality of life in dogs with orthopedic or neurological disease. After surgery, hydrotherapy enables a quicker return of function by improving muscle mass and range of joint movement without the limb having to weight-bear. Patients with long term mobility problems will really benefit from improvements in muscle mass and joint mobility and will also see improved cardiovascular fitness. This in conjunction with diet, will aid weight loss programmes. Neurological patients can benefit by encouraging movement which leads to stimulation of proprioception receptors thereby aiding nerve regeneration (pets suffering from CDRM or fibroartilaginous emboli are ideal candidates.)

Orthopaedic Veterinary Surgeons give hydrotherapy a big thumbs up

"The hydrotherapy centre will provide a huge positive benefit to our patients, which our clients will see and value. After a few years, I expect we'll wonder how we lived without it!"

Meet The Team

Su Glass

I have worked for GVG, since leaving full time education, as a nurse I was promoted to Head Nurse and remained at the Hospital along with a team of 10 nurses and 5 vets for 7 years. I left to raise my children.

I returned part time to our Loughton branch to join the nursing/reception staff. In conjuction with our Vet, I set up ‘puppy parties’ to help educate and socialise puppies and guide/advice their owners towards happy, responsible pet ownership.

I was with Loughton for 6 years and left to take up a new challenge here at hydrotherapy setting up our purpose built pool facility. I completed my hydrotherapy training at Hawksmoor, a recognised establishment excellent in this field.

I have a deep interest in dog behaviour, completing Jan Fennels’ foundation course in 2004.

My previous nursing and behavioural experience has proved invaluable at the pool to aid the confidence required for our dogs successful rehabilitation.

I have since been joined by two other hydrotherapists for our ever increasing workload bringing out team up to three.

I was born in Oslo, the capital of Norway, but grew up in Voss a small ski resort in the mountains. From a young age I have been involved with closely with the veterinary field. I moved to the England in 1997 and spent two years on the veterinary course in Liverpool. I moved back to Norway with my husband and worked alongside him in a veterinary clinic, whilst studying at university.

My duties in the veterinary clinic included staff training, veterinary nursing and working as a pet behaviour counselor. In 2004 my family and I relocated to Cardiff, Wales where I continued to work alongside my husband, became more involved in animal behaviour consultation and held responsibility for organization and running of puppy socialization groups.

I have been in London since November 2006 and began working for Goddard Veterinary Group in November 2007. I have gained full qualification in hydrotherapy at Hawksmoor Training Centre and look forward to creating a service to satisfy the clients and benefit the patients that attend the Chingford Hydrotherapy Pool.

My special interests include, rehabilitation of patients following surgery, adjunct exercise programmes for weight loss clinics and developing an animal friendly and confidence building environment for my patients.

I joined the Goddard veterinary group in 2002 as a trainee veterinary Nurse. I gained my qualification as a registered Veterinary Nurse in 2006 whilst attending the Wanstead Veterinary Hospital. It was during this time that I realised my passion for Canine Rehabilitation, having seen the benefits of Hydrotherapy and Physiotherapy for myself.

In 2006 I was given the opportunity by Wanstead Hospital to develop my passion in this field joining the Hydrotherapy team at Chingford. I attended the Hawksmoor hydrotherapy training and practical Physiotherapy Course which I enjoyed immensely and this gave me an even wider knowledge of these therapies benefits. Additionally as a qualified Pet Health Counsellor with my specific area of expertise in the field of Canine Mobility and weight related issues I fully appreciate that Hydrotherapy is the way forward. Seeing first hand the improvements Hydrotherapy can make to the quality of life to dogs we treat with for example, conditions like Arthritis, obesity and Hip Dysplasia is so fulfilling and rewarding when you can see that you’ve made a real difference!
